Sustainable PPE and workwear recycling means saving money and offsetting Scope 3 CO2e emissions.
We continue to maintain our zero to landfill policy, and we are now working towards zero to incineration. Our alternative sustainable PPE recycling solution means that we ensure end of life PPE and workwear are re-purposed on behalf of our customers.
We are proud to be saving around 10 tonnes of workwear a week from needless destruction. Because every tonne of textiles produced generates 14.7 tonnes of CO2e emissions, prolonging the life of your workwear and PPE is a huge step up the waste hierarchy ladder. https://wrap.org.uk/taking-action/textiles/initiatives/scap-2020
- We wash, inspect and return around 70% of all workwear, gloves and PPE for re-use.
We wash and de-brand unwanted PPE that is still fit for purpose and donate it to charity, and in collaboration with our UK-Based recycling partners:
- 65% NFP polyester garments are deconstructed to make new polyester yarn, so closed loop recycling
- We send NFP single fibre gloves and workwear to be shredded and made into waste product fibres (WPF), blankets, pet bedding and insulation.
- We ensure that NFP hardhats and safety glasses are granulated for incorporation into new plastic products.
- We donate unwanted footwear to charity, but NFP footwear is shredded and re-purposed.
- Currently, coated NFP gloves are used for energy generation from waste (ERW). Exciting new research indicates they can be used as aggregates instead of sand, our next project!
Nothing we handle goes to landfill and we are continuously exploring new waste streams
Sustainable Energy Recovery from Waste
We feed end of life gloves into Veolia’s Battlefield HTI Centre. It’s authorised by the Environmental Agency (EA) under the IPPC provisions of the 1990 Environmental Protection Act. Based in Shrewsbury, Veolia are now supplying power to Shropshire by incinerating waste.
Furthermore, we’re generating clean waste, which needs a much lower incineration temperature and so saves on energy.
Veolia collects the PPE waste from us monthly service and recycle their own gloves through us too!
